President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has proposed the name of former Supreme Court Judge Abdul Ghani Mohamed for the vacant post of Chief Justice. The nomination has been forwarded to the Judiciary Committee for further review.
The position became vacant following the retirement of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan on 21 May.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had opened applications for the post, closing the process last Tuesday. Only three individuals applied: former High Court Chief Justice Shujau Usman, Family Court Judge and former Criminal Court Chief Justice Abdulla Mohamed, and Abdul Ghani Mohamed, who currently heads the Tax Appellate Tribunal.
All three candidates were interviewed by the JSC, with Abdul Ghani receiving the highest score.
Abdul Ghani brings two decades of judicial experience, having served at various levels of the judiciary including civil courts, the High Court, and the Supreme Court.
