High Court has overturned the eight-year prison sentence for corruption being served by the former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor and freed him.
On 23 June 2016, the former Vice President was sentenced to eight years in prison following the MMPRC Corruption Scandal. The High Court overturned the sentence and ordered another investigation.
The High Court ruling today highlighted the Supreme Court ruling on 1 February 2018 to release the political detainees at the time.
Today’s ruling said that after Adeeb was sentenced to eight years, his name is on the list of people to be released in the order from the Surpreme Court on 1 February 2018. And although the Supreme Court has reversed parts of the order, it has not reversed the part that say the order was forced under outside influence.
While the eight-year sentence against Adeeb have been overturned, the ten-year sentence against him for possession of a firearm was overturned by the Supreme Court on Monday.
Adeeb was also sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement in the explosion on board the Presidential Launch. However, on 20 May 2019, the High Court overruled the sentence by the Criminal Court and ordered the case to be re-investigated.
Thus, all the sentences passed on the former Vice President has now been overturned.
