India and Bangladesh have agreed to repatriate 185 fishermen who were arrested for accidentally crossing maritime borders. This move focuses on addressing the humanitarian and livelihood concerns of fishing communities.
Bangladesh is releasing 95 Indian fishermen, while India is sending back 90 Bangladeshi fishermen. The handover will take place at sea with the help of coastguard units.
Some of the fishermen have been in custody since September. The exchange also includes fishing boats, with two Bangladeshi vessels held in India and six Indian boats in Bangladesh being returned.
Officials from both countries emphasised the importance of this agreement in helping fishing communities, despite ongoing diplomatic tensions. The exchange is expected to be completed by Sunday.
