Hithadhoo MP, Mohamed Aslam has revealed that he has confirmed enough votes to secure the role of Speaker of Parliament.
The 19th session of the Parliament would be sworn in on May 28. Aslam is one of the front runners for the Speaker of Parliament, and has the full support of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
MDP holds a super-majority of 65 seats in the Parliament this year, hence all the candidates who are campaigning for the Speakership are from MDP. However, the strongest contenders seem to be Aslam and Vilufushi MP, Hassan Afeef.
Apart from these two, Central Henveiru MP, Ali Azim, Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam and Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef had previously expressed their interests of being the Speaker as well.
In an interview given to the "60 Minute" program on Raajje TV, Aslam revealed that he has been talking with several MPs regarding the matter. He added that most of the MPs were in his favor and support him, hence he has been able to confirm enough votes to secure being the Speaker of the 19th session of Parliament.
Aslam also stressed that he came forward for the role of Speaker after several MPs had requested him to do so.
Even though President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had previously said that Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef was among one of the best candidates for Speaker, Aslam noted that he does not believe that the President has endorsed one specific candidate for the role.
MDP will decide on a candidate for the Speaker of Parliament on May 27.
A new Speaker for the Parliament will be chosen during the first meeting of the Parliament after May 28.
